This is the saucer magnolia outside the kitchen windows. Last fall Stephen planted daffodils in the back for the first time. They grew and bloomed wonderfully, and it was a delight to have that shocking patch of yellow.
To the right of the saucer magnolia is our tallest regular magnolia - magnolia virginiana - which is now about 45 feet high. We lost about 15 feet off the top during a derecho we had a few years back. In our climate, the magnolia virginiana is an evergreen, while the saucer magnolia is deciduous.
