Saturday June 28, 2014 Drumstick alliums

Last fall, in an attempt to discourage our hungry deer, I planted a new allium which is supposed to bloom early to mid-summer.  Drumstick alliums, allium sphaerocephalon, look like long drumsticks when they are first coming up, as seen in this June 6th photo.

About ten days later the flower bud has grown significantly and the deep red color is just starting to show.

By June 28th, they were in full bloom and a total honey bee magnet.

I will definitely by planting more of these beauties next year!
