Friday May 6, 2016 Off to D.C.

Stephen wakes me up at some uncivilized hour so we can catch our train to Washington D.C.
Stephen Boydstun and Walter Klingler take Amtrak from Lynchburg, VA to Washington D.C.
Yes, folks, that's us on the train.  Stephen is his usual happy self and I am desperately trying to wake up.

After checking into our hotel, Stephen headed to the gym and I zoned out.  Later we had dinner at Elephant & Castle on 19th St. NW before heading out to the Kennedy Center.

The National Symphony Orchestra was performing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, and the world renowned violinist, Vadim Gluzman, was making his NSO debut.
Gluzman sure made his 1690 "Ex-Leopold Auer" Stradivarius violin sing throughout the house.

After intermission, we settled back into our fabulous seats for Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11, "The Year 1905".   Shostakovich slowly takes the listener through the angst of Russia's Bloody Sunday and ends with a triumphant sound, with full orchestra playing, cymbals crashing, bass drums pounding, field drums tapping, triangles clinging, and chimes ringing.

The performances were fantastic!  We dragged our tails back to our hotel and crashed.
