Monday, November 13, 2017 Middelton Place, South Carolina

First settled in the late 17th century, with the family residence dating from 1705, Middleton Place

was acquired by Henry Middleton through his marriage to Mary Williams in 1741.

It is still under the same family stewardship.

The original house and north  flanker was burned down during the Civil War.

The less damaged south flanker was  restored by the family in 1869 to be used as their residence.

To add insult to injury,  the 1886 earthquake  required

additional repairs to the south flanker home as well as the Butterfly Lakes which were completely destroyed.

Middleton is credited with having the first landscaped  garden in North America.

There are currently 60 acres of landscaped gardens containing statues, swans, and sheep.

We toured the house  and walked around some of the gardens, often sitting down in the shade and enjoying the  beautiful grounds.

After spending the day at Middleton Place, we drove to Charleston and checked into our hotel, King's Courtyard Inn, a charming 1853

building with multiple courtyards, parking, breakfast, cocktail hour, bar, convenient location,  and two very lazy cats who just lay in the sun.
